When Headmistress Marevas had been alive, Xavier's secret was well kept and private; though she would make sure that some extra rare steaks were sent up directly to his place at the Slytherin table. He felt a pang of guilt, walking briskly along the dungeon corridors one evening, that he had never expressed his gratitude enough. It was well known throughout the United Kingdom that their meat was always rather well done, but with express instruction the house elves were able to produce rare, bloody meat dishes for him on a regular basis. Now however, the new headmistress was in charge, and Xavier had not felt quite right to disclose his true nature to her. The school nurse of course knew, but he couldn't expect her to procure every meal for him; he was seventeen for Merlin's sake.
It was this knowledge, combined with a grumbling belly that he found himself in front of the basket of fruit portrait in one of the warmer parts of the dungeon. He reached up and tickled the pear, watching it squirm and transform into a door handle. Allowing a small smile to reach his lips, he turned the handle and entered the vast kitchens. Immediately several house elves were upon him, bowing and asking for his food requests. His stomach gave a particularly vicious growl, and he requested two very rare hamburgers with cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and garlic aeoli; that would be enough to quell his rumbling stomach. He sat down and watched the house elves rush around with a bemused expression on his face. It was all very fascinating to him that they seem to content to work all day and night and hardly ever rest. He saw then several other elves rush back towards the door, where another student had just entered, though he doubted it was for the exact same reasons as him.

Callie stood in front of her full length mirror for at least twenty minutes studying her reflection. Her thick dark hair hung loosely over her right shoulder, her all black robes swept down perfectly to the floor, and her eyes had that familiar wicked gleam. But that wasn't what she was focused on. Rather, it was the Prefect's badge pinned neatly to her chest, a physical embodiment of the power she so desired. Without it, she still held a degree of power. It was an unspoken thing - as she walked past groups of students in the halls they fell silent, staring in awe or fear, or moving out of her way. It was like they were afraid to step on her toes in case she told her mother about them. The thought brought a small smirk to her face. But this badge made things official, and it came with duties. Tonight, those duties included patrolling the dungeons.
Her first few weeks of school, Callie had spent her time getting to know every inch of the castle. She read countless history books and studied several published maps, getting to know its secrets. One such secret she had stumbled upon was the location of the Kitchens. She knew exactly where to locate the picture of the fruit and exactly how to get in. She figured tonight would be the perfect opportunity to discover what the fuss was about the Hogwarts house elves after all. After tickling the pear, she entered the vast Kitchens, an area larger than she would have expected. Callie let it all soak in before she noticed someone already down there, disgustingly devouring something that smelled bloody and raw. Her eyes narrowed infinitesimally and she took a few steps, dozens of house elves rushing to her side. She never took her eyes off the other student. "And just what do you think you're doing here?" she inquired coolly, nodding her chin in his direction and sniffing with disdain.

Xavier had heard someone come in, but chose to ignore them; they could clearly see he was eating and wouldn't disturb him unless it was absolutely necessary. Apparently this girl thought it was so, and he looked up at her as he swallowed a bite of his burger and wiped his mouth with a napkin one of the house elves had thoughtfully set down next to him. "Why miss, I thought that answer'd be obvious, since we are in the kitchens and there is food in front of me," he said, his Southern drawl dripping like the juices coming from his burger. He saw the look of disdain on her face and inwardly chuckled; people never seemed to like rare meat as much as he but it didn't really bother him. "Does the smell of rare meat bother you? I recommend stepping over to the left the smell is not as strong over there," he advised. He took another bite and devoured the rest of his burger hungrily.
He wondered for a moment if she was actually questioning his reasons for being there after dinner; he was not wearing his Quidditch captain badge or anything that proclaimed him to be seventeen with a late curfew, but he didn't see how that was her problem. Giving her a once-over, he saw the blue and bronze Prefects badge perched proudly on her robes, and had to refrain himself from rolling his eyes. She was clearly new to the Prefect business; most of the others really could care less if someone from either Hufflepuff of Slytherin snuck off for a late-night snack. "Is there something else I can help you with miss?" he asked.

Callie's eyes raked over this boy. She didn't trust his too bright eyes or his cowboy accent. He seemed awfully blasé about breaking the rules, and this unsettled Callie. Ever since transferring to this school, she had been constantly harping on her mother about how Hogwarts students just seemed to blatantly disobey the rules of the institution. Callie's complaints were heard and that was why there was now a badge pinned to her chest.
Callie pursed her lips as he gave her an answer that basically made a mockery of her initial question. He even had the audacity to tell her where to stand! These students were zoo animals, honestly. She wrinkled her nose and began walking slowly around the Kitchens, ignoring the house elves rushing behind her, until finally she was standing right next to the boy.
"Students are forbidden from faculty areas, unless with the escort or written permission of a faculty member," Callie recited slowly, in the iciest tone she could muster. She paused for added effect before continuing. "The kitchens are considered a faculty area, and I don't see any professors around, so for your sake I hope there's a note in your robes with a really good reason as to why you're above the rules," she finished, raising an eyebrow.

Oh yes, Xavier had pinned this girl for the rule following, no-nonsense uptight little witch the moment she had made her presence known in the kitchens. The way she sounded so robotic when she had recited the rules of entering what she called 'faculty' rooms after hours and her look of disgust when he spoke to her about the smell almost made him laugh. He refrained though; it was so clear that she was being so serious and he could almost take pity on her. Almost.
Xavier took his time answering her, munching on his french fries slowly, not breaking eye contact with her. He imagined his continued defiance towards her would be driving her mad. He swallowed and accepted a goblet of juice from another house self. He took a long gulp of the cold, sweet juice before turning his attention back to her. "Well miss, I am a seventh year and a Quidditch Captain, which means I have just as much right as you to prowl around at night," he began, fishing something out of the depths of his robes. He pulled out a scroll and shoot it out, slowly pushing it towards her face so she could see the loopy writing of the schools' nurse. "But if that does not please your highness, here is the note from the school nurse giving myself, Xavier Rutherford, permission to..as you so eloquently put it 'be above the rules'." He rolled the scroll back up and tucked it securely in his pocket. He munched on a fry thoughtfully, still looking at her. He wondered how uncomfortable he was making her at this point. "So does the girl have a name, or is it simply 'The Prefect'," he asked her, unable to keep a smirk from creeping up on his face.

Callie didn't take her eyes off this boy as he continuously shoved his face full of food. He seemed to be enjoying the fact that he was so blatantly defying her and it made her twitch just slightly in anger. He was a repulsive, careless boy who tried to mask this with some Southern charm. Callie wasn't going to let this guy get under her skin. She was Calliope Noelle Pendergrast, and she did not back down from a challenge.
The boy then decided it was the appropriate time to finally answer her, and he came up with some weak answer about being a seventh year and a Quidditch captain. Callie couldn't contain her scoff. So he was a repulsive, careless jock which made it so much worse. Anyone who would voluntarily risk their life for the sake of a little athletic glory had a warped mind in Callie's opinion. This dumb jock wasn't about to hold that one over her head, oh no no no. Just as she was about to reply, he pulled out a scroll signed from the school nurse, stating that Xavier Rutherford did have permission to be in the Kitchens. That caught her off guard slightly but she recovered nearly instantly. "You think you know the rules better than me? Let me tell you, the rules are about to change. In fact, this whole school is going to become reformed, and when it does, don't you ever try and use some pathetic sports badge as an excuse for breaking the rules," she spat, before immediately covering her mouth with her hand. She had never said anything so outright rude to a person's face before. She always had the thoughts, but she never actually acted upon them. Maybe she could recover from this, maybe there was some way she could take it back. He asked for her name, and the idea quickly came to mind. "I'm Holly," she said, albeit slightly sweeter than the last time she had spoken to him. "Holly Pendergrast."

He had touched a nerve, Xavier could see it plain as day when she lost her cool. He could almost taste her conflicting emotions, and highly doubted she had ever so much as raised her voice towards someone like she just had before."Easy now sweetheart, don't want to disturb the house elves now do you?" he drawled. He beckoned towards a house elf who brought an ice cream sandwich to him and took a bite. "You should let it out more often though, keeping all your feelings bottled in can lead to explosions you won't want people seeing," he added, raising a brow. She was an odd bird, this one.
Xavier's eyes raked over her as she gave her name to be Holly Pendergrast. Pendergrast, the new headmistress had twin daughters. From what he had read about them in the blurb the Daily Prophet had posted this past week, Adelaide Pendergrast was a widow with twin daughters; Holly was definitely one of them but the other name was escaping him. It was some Greek name of a goddess or a muse or something....Calliope! That was it. His eyes narrowed in on the shining Prefect's badge pinned on the girl calling herself Holly's chest. It was definitely a Ravenclaw badge, but he could have sworn that the Ravenclaw was the other twin. The too-sweet tone in her voice set off all the bells in his head, and he stood up. "Well it's nice to meet you Holly. But wouldn't you rather go by your real name, Calliope?" he asked, matching her tone as he walked slowly up to her until their faces were inches away. "Do I look like a fool to you?" he whispered softly, his eyes never leaving her face as he continued speaking. "You're new to the school, so I'll give you a pass for trying to one up me darlin. Know this; I may be the Quidditch captain of Slytherin, and maybe you think I am a dumb jock with air between the ears. But there's a lot of things you definitely don't know about me, and you don't want to find those out. So you can do your job and be the best darn Prefect your mama will be proud of, but you need to stay out of my way."

Callie wrinkled her nose ever so slightly. Xavier was really starting to get on her nerves. All her life her mother had been telling her that she needed to loosen up and not be so uptight so that she would be more likeable, just like Holly. Growing up constantly in her twin's shadow had caused Callie to internalize a lot of emotions, and so despite the cool, calm, and collected exterior she typically exuded, sometimes her emotions were bound to bubble up to the surface and blow up in somebody's face. This time, it just happened to be this stranger, Xavier Rutherford. He made her feel inferior and belittled as he doled out the 'sweethearts' and 'darlins' so generously and completely disregarded - even laughed at! - her authority. He knew she was a Prefect and the Headmistress' daughter and he still wasn't going to budge. She was all out of ammo, and now what?
Callie snapped out of her reverie when she heard him address her by her true name. He's done his research, she thought smugly. "What's the point in asking a question you already know the answer to?" she inquired. Suddenly his face was mere inches from her own and it took everything she had not to take a step back. She froze, but stared back into those piercing eyes of his. "Are you threatening me?" she questioned in soft disbelief, raising her eyebrows. This was why she preferred to keep things bottled up, because once the emotions started spewing, it was too late to stop them. "You don't scare me," she said. "And I will get to the bottom of whatever it is you're trying to hide. The nurse doesn't just hand out special permission letters to just anybody. Underestimate me and you will rue the day."

Xavier laughed loudly when Callie asked if he was threatening her. “Sweetheart, you really need to learn to tell the difference between a threat and a warning. It was the latter by the way; if I was threatening you, you’d know,” he told her, his eyes darkening slightly. “I asked you your name to see if you’d answer truthfully; I didn’t know you were a Pendergrast until you said. The way your voice went all sweet and innocent when you said your twins name made me realize you were the other one,” he explained casually, taking a step back so that she would feel less threatened and possibly, just maybe relax a little.
He took a lot of effort not to roll his eyes when Callie announced she would be finding out why exactly he has the nurse’s note to be in the kitchen after hours. He thought Ravenclaws were supposed to be the smart ones; didn’t she know when to nose out of people’s private affairs? Perhaps the notion of being the Headmistresses daughter and a Prefect gave her a sense of entitlement that she needed to know everything that went on in the castle. It was time to put her in her rightful place. “You’re right Miss Pendergrast, not everyone gets a note from the nurse to be in the kitchens whenever they can, and I do have a legitimate reason. That reason however, is not something I am required to share with a Prefect nor anyone else for that matter. If you do try to find out what it is, I can assure you, you will fail. Heed my warnin’ though sweetheart; my personal affairs are not something you want to be meddling with, so stop while you’re ahead and remember that the world does not owe you any favors just because you are the Headmistresses daughter. So go run along and find someone else you can actually get in trouble tonight, and stay out of my business.” He gave her a jaunty grin and swigged back more of his juice, watching her for her reaction.

Callie twitched slightly as Xavier's words cut across the Kitchens with a sharpness Callie could only ever hope to muster. However, she wasn't going to let on that he was starting to frighten her. "The other one? You made a lucky guess," Callie said, exhaling as he took a step back from her. She hadn't even realized she had been holding her breath the entire time he was speaking to her, and she was grateful that he had backed off a little. She didn't know what she expected him to do but there was a bite to his voice that didn't sit right with her. Thankfully, her wand was tucked safely in the pocket of her robes, only a short distance away if she needed to use it.
"Listen, I'm not trying to cause you any trouble here. I'm just tired of everybody in this school running amuck and thinking they can get away with every little thing. When I came to this school, I thought Hogwarts was supposed to be the best magical institution in the world. Imagine my disappointment when it's nothing but...a zoo! Why is it that you people always have to disobey the rules and disregard your educations?!" Callie spat, her voice breaking on the last word. She realized she had gone off on a complete tangent, but all the disappointment and despair she had been feeling upon arriving at this school had just bubbled up over the surface and spilled out right then and there. "I like knowing things because I like understanding people. That's all," she said, sighing in defeat. She was really starting to hate this place.

Xavier felt a pang of pity as Calliope tried to explain herself. She really didn't seem all that great at conversations; maybe that's why she struck him as a loner type. He found it interesting that the reality was they could be quite similar deep down, even though they were very, VERY different. "Look, Calliope, I don't mean to scare you or make you feel threatened or anythin' like that. I can get that you're curious 'bout what my situation is and why I have permission to be in the kitchens. But, as hard as it may be to grasp, there are just some things you are better off knowing, and this is one of them. I promise you it ain't anything illegal; let's just call it health reasons as to why I'm allowed down here right now. It's the truth to an extent anyway," he told her, taking another step back from her and sitting down on a bench.
With a snap of his fingers, a bowl of vanilla ice cream with heath bar crunchies and chocolate fudge was brought over to him. He almost laughed aloud when he thought of Callie's reaction to the new addition to his meal. What she didn't know is that since it was almost full moon he hadn't been feeling himself and had barely been able to get a scrap of food down all day. Nighttime always made him feel better, and with that his appetite had returned with a vengeance. The pitying feeling though came back when she talked about how the school was such a zoo. Personally, Xavier would have despised it here if everyone followed the rules at all times. What a boring life she must lead if she felt she needed to do that. "Why don't you order something for dessert? You'll feel a little more at ease with somethin' delicious in your belly, and maybe you'll understand why students like to sneak down here at night? Besides, its not like you or I are breakin' any school rules by bein' down here," he suggested, watching her carefully.
