CHARMS
Welcome to Charms. My name is Professor van Houten, and my office hours will be held an hour before each lesson. If you wish to come to office hours, you may receive 5 house points, depending on if I feel you are grasping the material that you are having trouble with, or at least making an attempt.
Welcome to Charms. My name is Professor van Houten, and my office hours will be held an hour before each lesson. If you wish to come to office hours, you may receive 5 house points, depending on if I feel you are grasping the material that you are having trouble with, or at least making an attempt.
Course Description
This class will have two components. The first component is Theory of Charms. Theory of Charms will require much reading from your assigned textbook, The Standard Book of Spells by Miranda Goshwak. If you do not own a copy of this textbook, I will assume you do not care about the class and your grade will suffer accordingly. It is important to know the background on charm work in order to precisely perform wand movement and incantation enunciation. Most theory classes will be lecture based, and not all information in the lectures will be in the book.
The second component is practical charmwork. After learning the theory behind wand movements and incantations, all students will have the opportunity to actually perform the spells. I will closely monitor each student during the practical classes, and give necessary aid. I expect all student to try to help each other any way they can as I am only one man.
Course Learning Objectives
1. Explain concepts, theories, and importance of charms appropriate to age and year
2. Apply charm work indicators within the context of magical development
3. Identify and discuss the future trends in charms.
Course Policies
I expect each student to be on time for class and prepared with their wand, textbook, ink, quill and parchment. There will be note taking in the theoretical classes. Absences will not be tolerated in this class. Every day is mandatory, as we will be moving through the material quickly. Only family and medical emergencies are acceptable excuses. You don't want to miss out on learning how to turn your eyebrows blue!
Late assignments will have a penalty of five (5) house points each day it is late.
Homework and Classwork
There will be four (4) exams given throughout the course of the year. One will be in late October, one right before winter holiday, one in March, and a final CUMULATIVE exam. This will prepare you for mandatory exams later in life. There will also be at least ten essays throughout the year on various subjects. Most work will be reading and practicing charmwork.
I am available to all students whenever needed. I will usually be in my office or the Staff Lounge if you have a question that cannot wait for class or office hours. Please do not hesitate to come find me.
Charms is a crucial class, but that does not mean it can not be fun. I look forward to the year
