The path to the Astronomy tower was familiar to Henry. Again and again, he trudged up the stairs, only to sit for hours and watch the moon carve a path across the dark sky. It was near midnight, and Henry knew that he wasn't allowed to be in the Astronomy tower at this time. But he didn't care, and he didn't get caught. In primary school, he was taught the essentials. The brightest star in the sky was Sirius. He used to confuse it with planets, objects that also shone brightly like the stars. In fourth year, all of the students had to create a model of one of the planets. Henry had chosen the planet Saturn because of the ethereal rings. But to him, the most beautiful planet couldn't be seen in the sky because he was living on it. Whenever he felt homesick, Henry looked to the stars, knowing that his mother and father could do the same. They would be looking at the same moon, the same Sirius, the same planets if they were visible. This always brought comfort to him, and while the homesickness eventually faded, the feeling of calmness he found in looking up remained as strong as ever. Tonight was no different, as Henry pushed open the door of the Astronomy tower, and quickly looked up at the sky. The moon was bright as ever, almost full, and the night was clear, dotted with bright pinpricks of light. He drank in the sky, staring hungrily at the moon and stars, identifying those that he knew, sometimes making up stories about ones he didn't. Nobody knew about his semi-regular trips to the tower. He didn't worry about being caught. Henry was never caught. So caught up in the serenity of the night, Henry tilted his face up to the sky, closing his eyes for a moment, letting the faint white light wash over him. His eyes snapped open when he heard distinct footsteps on the tower steps, and he quickly moved out of the direct line of sight from the door. Henry never got caught. Except tonight.

It wasn't often that Ryan made the journey all the way to the Astronomy tower, hell, he didn't even take the class. It was peaceful though, almost tranquil, he felt at ease up here, he was usually alone, sometimes joined by the odd stray student here and there thinking that they're all rebellious for being out of bed at such a late hour. His feet tapped along the floor as usual and as he did, he heard a scuffle along, as if someone was hiding up here. "Hello?" He called out, trying to find out who was up here. He'd be screwed if it was one of the professors, but it was a risk worth taking, he decided. No one replied to him, it must have been a figment of his imagination, once more. The sixteen year old was convinced he was cracking up a lot of the time, his mental state must be losing it's edge; yeah sure it is Hogwarts, it's magical and odd things happen all the time but sometimes things took the biscuit. He finally found a spot on the floor, not the most comfortable of places, but it would do, and being this tired, he decided it was time to just relax, probably fall asleep for a few hours to the view of the night sky.
His bag banged on the floor, which would probably alert anyone who was hiding up here to his presence if they didn't hear him calling out, filled with cans of energy drink from the muggle world; one thing he was good at doing was smuggling things in, essentials, he called them. It didn't take him long to pick out the first can, cracked it open and took a good swig, the bitter sweet refreshing zing in his mouth was almost like heaven. The moon was gliding across the sky, the odd cloud here and there and his mood changing to simply relaxed. This is the life.

Henry had not been graceful as he had scuffled out of sight of the person who walked up the stairs. He held his breath, hoping that it wasn't a professor. When he realized it was another student, he exhaled slowly. It had been his closest call ever. Henry took a few steps towards the newcomer, who had settled down and cracked open an aluminum can. With the brightness of the moon, Henry immediately recognized one of his roommates, Ryan. They were good friends, but Henry of course had never told him of his trips to the astronomy tower. "Ryan?" he asked. Henry got a good look at his face, and noticed how relaxed he was. Henry wondered how he could ever be so calm, when mostly he was just... excited wasn't the right word. Henry loved his father, but he would not approve of their friendship or being roommates. He was very conservative. And so it was another secret he kept. Silently, Henry collapsed into a sitting position next to Ryan, glancing at what he was drinking. He gasped, being thrown back to late nights and early mornings during the summer, trying to wake himself up for work as a camp counselor. "Where'd you get that?" he blurted out. "Not like they have that stuff just lying around here," added Henry sheepishly. A comfortable silence stretched between them, and Henry's eyes once again drifted upwards. It was odd, how usually he would find this place relatively empty. He had good timing, of course. But now, his roommate and friend was sitting here next to him, and Henry didn't know how he felt about sharing the tower. He didn't usually like to share. Suddenly, Henry pointed up to a relatively bright spot in the southwestern part of the sky. "See that?" he asked quickly. "That's Saturn. It can be seen throughout the month." tag/Ryan Cunningham

Ryan almost let out a small gasp when he heard someone mentioning his name from the darkness, he was almost ready to shoot just about every single hex he had in his arsenal at the darkness to try and ward off any attackers, until he realised who it was. "Oh, hey mate," He began, but before he could offer Henry to take a seat next to him, he already had. Fair enough really, they did quite often end up in cramped areas together, it was just natural they had to be comfortable enough to take liberties such as that with each other. He took another glug of the can of Monster, then pulled another out of his bag and passed it towards his room mate, with a small smirk on his face. "My father taught me the tricks of smuggling things into the castle" A sly look about him gave it away, "I have more than enough to last me till Christmas before I go home and get more," He finished off; he took after his father. He wasn't even sure if Henry would take the can or not, or even like it, his father was the Prime Minister, had he even tried this sort of stuff before? Coming from a mostly magical parenthood with a slight muggle influence, he knew that this stuff was common in the muggle world, but he wasn't sure how common it was.
As Henry directed his line of sight towards Saturn, Ryan nodded. Admittedly, he wasn't hugely into the whole astrology thing and he didn't really care about other planets, but he wasn't going to be rude about it and completely shoot him down. "That's cool man, how'd you know about this stuff anyway? Like, weren't you good at it all before you even got here anyway?" He asked, vaguely remembering back almost five years ago. "What you doing up here anyway? It's not like you to be sneaking out, and if you do it's got to be after I've gone out," he began, then took another long glug of his drink, "I always check to see who's awake and who isn't." He finished off, his eyes tracing Henry's face. He had always found himself able to talk to Henry about just about anything, he felt stupidly comfortable around the guy, comfortable enough to ask for his opinion on outfits and hairstyles, even. As stupid as it sounds, but that is one thing that Ryan prides himself in; his good sense of fashion and wouldn't want to leave looking like he was dressed by a blind hobo, admittedly, right now he didn't look amazing. He was simply wearing a pair of joggers, trainers and a hoodie underneath his cloak, but it was coming on midnight, who else was going to be about?

Henry felt almost awestruck when Ryan passed him the can of Monster. He turned it over in his hands, the feelings of nostalgia from summers past rushing through him. "I used to drink this stuff all the time. I was tired a lot during the summer, kids are a lot to handle," he said, cracking open the can and taking a long swig. "Thanks, by the way," he added, a beat late. "Plus, I hate the taste of coffee. So bitter." He scrunched his nose, the unpleasant taste from his memories flooding his mouth. He took another sip of the energy drink, trying to wash it away. This stuff always affected him-- he would be up all night. But that was alright, considering he didn't have much to do tomorrow. Henry chewed the inside of his cheek as he thought of how to describe how he knew about the stars and planets. "Well, obviously we had to learn the stuff in primary," he said. He knew Ryan was comfortable around him. And Ryan was an easy person to be around. But Henry wasn't quite ready to come all out. "I know it because I'm taking astronomy," he said, curtly and somewhat awkwardly. "I think its cool that we're learning the same things at Hogwarts as we could be learning in the muggle world." He didn't mention the connection he made with the sky and his parents. But then Ryan questioned what he was doing up on the Astronomy tower. "Couldn't sleep," he muttered, being careful to keep his gaze directed upwards. Henry always drew the curtains around his four poster bed when he left the room for the night. Ryan must have assumed that he was sleeping and wanted privacy, and Henry hoped all of his roommates would. "I like to take risks," said Henry, finally glancing at Ryan with a mischievous grin. "That's why I'm in Gryffindor, of course. And what's better than the risk of being caught?" tag/Ryan Cunningham

He nodded as Henry thanked him for the can of Monster, then listened to him as he spoke about learning things in the muggle world. It wasn't something that he had ever really thought about, he only ever really thought that his qualifications from Hogwarts were relevant to the world of wizarding, but it did get him thinking. "To be honest mate, I wouldn't really know much about that, I got home schooled by my dad" He confessed, well, not much of a confession, it wasn't something he was particularly embarrassed about, he thought it was absolutely normal for that sort of thing to go on, if only he knew the half of it. Coffee was Ryan's second calling, though, he couldn't understand why anyone could dislike the taste of coffee; the moment it hit his lips he was a lot more wide awake. It was time for a change of subject, they were both up late, watching the stars and he knew it was time to pop the all important question. "What are you doing this Christmas? Like, I'm throwing a party at dad's again a few days after, probably New Years, you game?" He asked, there were a fair few people already going and his dad already knew about it. He couldn't throw a party without his friends from school there, even if he knew that a few of them did get a bit rowdy if they had a bit to drink, but often it was completely worth it, a simple spell in the morning would be absolutely fine and the house would be clean again.
As much as Henry had explained about how he knew so much about astronomy, he felt as if he was holding something back, but he decided it would be best not to press on the matter too much, not everyone was as open as Ryan, who could be too open at times, it was a well known fact throughout the dorm, he was always up for giving advice from his own personal experiences if he had them, if not then he would just give advice to the best of his ability. "Well, being a Gryffindor does have it's privileges, such as we know how to bullshit our way out of these situations if we get caught up here" He continued to chuckle, half expecting to be caught this time by a professor. He laid back onto his elbows and stretched his legs out after placing his can to his left, making himself more comfortable and placing his bag underneath his head and smiling to himself. His eyes opened after a few seconds to see some sort of comet fly across the ceiling past the moon and quickly disappear again. [/blockquote]

Henry hadn't known that Ryan was homeschooled before coming to Hogwarts, but he supposed that he should have figured as much. Growing up, he'd always thought that the homeschooled kids were weird and antisocial, but Ryan was neither of those things. Henry took another sip of the monster, feeling the energy starting to spread throughout his body. Henry scanned the sky, looking for the constellation Draco, which he knew would be visible in the sky tonight. Once he found the dragon, he started searching for Hercules, another one visible in July. Henry was lost in thought when Ryan asked him about Christmas plans. "It's only July, mate," he replied with a chuckle. "But I'm game. Why not? Wish I could just apparate over, but I'm not seventeen until next March," Henry continued with a frown. "Maybe I'll just do it anyways. How painful can splinching be?" he asked, more to himself than to Ryan. Henry grinned when Ryan explained how Gryffindors were fantastic at bullshitting. "True. I'm doing astronomy homework, what are you doing out here?" he asked with his brows raised. He stood up, knocking back the last of the energy drink as he did so. "How'd you explain all those muggle drinks in your bag?" He crushed the can on the wall before carelessly tossing it off the tower. He looked up just as Ryan did to see the comet flash across the sky. He guessed it may have been the Swift-Tuttle comet, since the Peresid meteor shower would be happening in around a week. "You ever heard of Halley's comet?" he asked. Halley's comet was the best known comet Henry could think of. He glanced at Ryan, wondering how much he knew about the sky. "I think astronomy is the only subject I'm actually decent at." tag/Ryan Cunningham

As Henry tossed the can off the side of the tower, Ryan knew it was going to ask questions if someone found it the next day or that night while doing their ground patrols, he didn't particularly care though, he was too chilled out to even contemplate the idea of getting caught with the cans, until Henry asked him about how he'd explain them. "I'll think of that when I get caught, but for now, I don't plan on being caught with them." He replied nonchalently and took one more swig of it. As much as he loved Monster, it did seem to go on endlessly whenever he had a can, he wasn't one of those who gulped it down in two glugs and then it was done, there was no point and it would prove to be a lot more expensive in the long run to enjoy a drink. When Henry asked him about some comet, it did seem to sound familiar, but he couldn't be sure. Maybe it had been on the news or something in the past and that's where he recognised it from. "Erm, yeah, I think so.." He muttered back, racking his brain trying to think how he had heard of it before.
He knew that Henry was playing down how good he was at subjects, he knew for a fact that he had beaten Ryan in other things for exams before, but then again, if Ryan didn't have much interest in a subject, he wouldn't bother paying attention or actually trying for it, especially Muggle Studies, it seemed like a subject they had just thrown in there for the sake of it and the professor teaching it, he was sure, was making most of it up. When he had spent a few weeks with his mother, it was not like it was described in classes at all. They made it out that it was crap, to be honest, but he preferred it in a sense, completely oblivious to most of the dangers of the world, and more oblivious to the idea of dragons being real. They were nasty creatures. "Well, let's face it, you like it, don't you? If you like a subject, you're bound to be good at it, really." He replied to Henry's comment about only being good at astronomy. A few seconds later, he threw his can over the edge of the tower, just as Henry had done and watched it fall down this time.

Knowing that Ryan probably couldn't see him well in this light, Henry rolled his eyes as his friend stated that he would think up an excuse on the spot. He asked him about Halley's comet. "Just came round about 2 years ago. Only comes every 72 years or so, you know," he added. "I saw it. It was unreal." Henry didn't answer at first about being good at a subject. "You're making me out to be like, some sort of genius. You and I both know I only scraped by with a few A's on my OWLS," said Henry, nudging Ryan jokingly. When he threw his can over the wall, Henry watched as Ryan traced its progress, all the way to the grounds. Feeling quite weird that he was watching Ryan so closely, Henry quickly looked out at the grounds, focusing finally on the dark outlines of the tall trees that made up the forbidden forest. "You ever been in the forest?" asked Henry, honestly curious. He knew so many people that were scared to go in the forest. They didn't want to take any risks with being caught by professors, or being attacked by monsters. None of that crap bothered Henry. He'd heard rumors of acromantulas in the forest, and centaurs as well. Every time he'd been in there, he'd look for any sign of a centaur. After all, they were his favorite magical creature. Henry wasn't all that in to nature, but he loved the thrill of doing something he wasn't allowed to do. Nothing like the burst of adrenaline tag/Ryan Cunningham

It was true, Henry did barely scrape some A's, but still, he did pass his exams and Ryan failed some of his. Still, here they were, up at night, drinking energy drink when they should be in bed. Ryan was just glad that he didn't have any classes until the afternoon, so he could sleep in all morning. When Ryan got nudged, he tilted over slightly, then he smiled. "You're such a fanny sometimes, you know." He teased, then listened to Henry's question. "Why? You going to offer to take me in there, then take advantage of me in the dark where no-one could see or hear me screaming for help?" He teased once more, this time adding a wink, trying to hide the fact he wanted to laugh at his own joke. Ryan was definitely too jokingly flirty with everyone, he just assumed people were used to it and knew it didn't mean anything. As attractive as Henry was, Ryan couldn't see him as anything more than a friend, which was probably a good thing with him being straight and everything, but it gave him the creeps whenever anyone asked him if he had feelings for him. Gay people's problems. Do you find so and so hot? 'no' Why not? They have a nice body and all the girls want him. Yeah, that's cool but just because Ryan's gay it didn't mean he felt every single guy was attractive, even if they are your stereotypical 'hot guy'. The amount of times he ended up almost screaming at people about it was ridiculous.
He finally pondered properly on what Henry had asked him about the forest, the truth was he hadn't. Not at night, anyway. He usually only went down during the day when he knew people would be relatively near by in case anything happened, like hell would he ever venture down on his own during the night, especially if he didn't have his wand with him. He might not be amazing at defence spells, but he was pretty talented when it came to transfiguration and hexes. Defending against horrible spells? No thanks, casting them? Completely different story. It wouldn't surprise him if he was destined to be some sort of evil over-lord, really. "Not been in there at night, have you?" He asked back, his eyes gazing out to it, the mist seemed to be settled just floating above it and amongst a few of the trees. Every now and then the trees would rustle and the odd bird would fly out, he could only assume something was on the hunt in there, he could only hope to whatever God there was that it wasn't a werewolf, as much as they fascinated them and found them to be beautiful creatures, he was honestly scared shitless by them. They could tear him apart in three seconds flat. "You fancy going down some time and exploring one night?" He offered, trying not to make his voice quiver at offering, he was pretty nervous about the idea and was already having second thoughts about backing out.

"Shut it," said Henry. "I'm not a fanny." Even denying it made him feel like one. Most of the time, it was pretty easy for Henry to forget that Ryan was gay. He never felt like he had to tiptoe around him because they had lived together for so long. But at Ryan's comment, he remembered. He froze for a second, trying to think of something to say that wouldn't offend him. He was silent for some time before he relaxed again. "Nah, mate. You're not my type. Besides, I'm way too good looking for you." He could tell that Ryan was holding back a laugh. "You're such a prat, laughing at your own jokes," he added. "Nothing gets by me." Henry asked Ryan if he'd been in the forest. When Ryan said that he'd never gone at night, Henry sighed. Was he just another one of those people who were too afraid? Well, he was on the astronomy tower after curfew. "'Course I have. Risk taker, remember?" said Henry, pounding twice on his chest. "Like my dad never said, Where there's a wand, there's a way." Henry couldn't hold back a laugh at his own joke. "It's like, tradition. Everyone has to go into the forest at night in order to really be a part of Hogwarts," he continued. He was absolutely making this up, but that didn't matter. If only he could convince him. It would be fun. "It will be fun." "But not tonight." Henry looked up at the sky again, as a meteorite flew across the sky. "Oi, make a wish," said Henry, grinning cheesily. He had to think for a long while about what his wish would be. It was stupid, since so-called shooting stars were relatively common, but he always felt a thrill every time he saw one. And so he usually made a wish, normally something dumb like I wish I could ride on the fastest roller coaster in the world, but tonight, he finally thought to himself I wish that we won't get caught.tag/Ryan Cunningham

When Henry froze for a second, Ryan could tell what was going through his mind, it didn't make him feel uncomfortable, but it did make him wonder if Henry ever did take him seriously and he wondered if he needed to stop being such a prat around some people. But it was part of his personality, he could switch from being the friendliest person going, to the guy holding all the jokes and then suddenly if the situation came to it, he could be absolutely disgusting and pretty much destroy someone emotionally. That side of him only came out when he was missing someone or missing home, or he had something terrible on his mind that he had been thinking about, usually something that had happened at home or to his brother. The one person he looked out for the most on the planet was his brother, as far as he was aware, his brother was one of his best friends, he felt he could confide in him what he couldn't confide in anyone else. As close as he felt to Henry, there were things he hadn't told him in the past, not because he didn't trust him, more because he knew he wouldn't be able to offer any advice on it; they came from different worlds and collided in the one that Ryan knew best. Sure, he had tastes of the muggle world, but he hadn't ever properly lived it, whenever he was in it, he loved it, but he knew that he couldn't stay there, he would get bored of not being able to whip out his wand and accio something over, or get his dad to use side-along apparatus to take him places, and Diagon Alley? Well, home from home, that place.
He snapped back into reality when Henry mentioned about a shooting star flying across the sky; he was right. What could he wish for? There was nothing more he could really want, a boyfriend maybe? Nah, too much effort. More money? Easy grades? Maybe, even possibly, the thought crossed his mind, to be straight. Sure, life would be a lot easier, but he wouldn't be him anymore, he knew that, but he often did fantasize about what it would be like to truly be 'one of the guys' and join in on their banter about the 'birds and their cracking tits'. He found his sexuality awkward at times, he knew most people had accepted it, but he still couldn't help but feel different from everyone else, probably because in a way he was, but at other times he felt like he fitted in so easily. His 'girlfriends' would always remind him that there was nothing wrong with it, his male friends would often give him banter about it, it was too often one or two would walk about and crack a joke about 'don't get your shorts off yet guys' or something similar, it didn't bother him too much, as if they'd even stand a chance around him, but still, it made him think some nights. It was too often he was up nearly all night just thinking about it, wishing for a straight pill to suddenly arrive, but he knew that wasn't happening any time soon, or if ever. He shrugged the thought off and looked up at the sky pretty quickly once more.
He didn't make a wish, but he pretended he did, let out a soft sigh and focused up on the stars. It was beautiful, as usual. The nights were where it was at, not all this day time business, it was too hot during the day. "Well, I suppose we could," He began, averting his eyes back towards the forest, allowed a smile to creep across his face and turned to Henry. "But you need to stop trying so hard to convince me to go in there, a simple 'lets go in there tomorrow' would have done." It was here, his sense of humour had suddenly arrived at banter train station in banter city. "Besides, we all know I'm the true man here." As he said it, he puffed out his chest and strutted around a bit, pretending to be the manliest gym junkie on the planet.

Henry hadn't thought he was trying too hard to convince Ryan to check out the forest, but his desire was transparent. "Whatever works. Got you to agree, didn't I?" said Henry. At Ryan's next comment though, Henry raised his brows. "Please. We both know that I'm the real man around here. I love meat. I have a dog. I do yard work without a wand. I'm not afraid of anything." In reality, none of these things really made him a manly man, except maybe the heavy lifting yard work bit. Growing up in a muggle household meant a lot of manual labor. Especially since since his father often complained of back pain from hunching over important documents all day at work, Henry was left with every chore. It was character building. But knowing Ryan hadn't grown up like him at all left Henry with questions. "What was it like, growing up knowing you could do magic?" he asked. He had never shown any outward signs of magical ability before entering Hogwarts, and he had no idea how he was a wizard. Probably some family secret that he wouldn't get until he was of age. In the muggle world. Two more years there, he thought. The difference in the age of adulthood was absolutely ridiculous in his opinion. He could be as reckless as he wanted, and it was his own damn fault, not his age's. tag/Ryan Cunningham

The innuendos he could make about Henry loving meat, it just opened him up to too many of them, but he decided it would be best not to, especially considering how late it was, he didn't know if Henry was tired and Ryan knew that when people were tired they can get volatile and unpredictable with mood swings, all too well. He knew he got like it a fair amount. Doing the lawn without a wand? That would be absolutely awful, in Ryan's mind anyway. "How do you even manage without magic at home? I couldn't do it all the time." He replied, he genuinely couldn't fathom the idea of not having his wand at his side all the time. When Henry asked him the question about what it was like, he didn't know how to reply. It was a difficult one, it's all he really knew. How different could it be, except that he had the idea that he'd be leaving home at eleven for most of the year. "Well, I guess it was different, but you know, it's what I was used to." He explained, pulled another can of energy drink out of his bag, passed it to Henry, then grabbed one for himself and opened it. "Like, I knew I'd be getting my wand, my pet, coming to Hogwarts and learning how to use it all properly, you get me?" He tried to explain, but he wasn't making much sense. "I guess it didn't come as a shock." He tried to put it simply, but was just opening up to more questioning opportunities.
He couldn't imagine what it was like having a dad who was so important in the country, it must be murder, having this image to uphold. What did they tell the press during big events that families were expected to attend at? Oh sorry, my son is a wizard? Ryan highly doubted that. "Do you ever miss home when you're here though?" He asked softly, beginning to think about his dad a bit, there was nothing better than one of his dad's home cooked meals and a glass of wine or a beer with it, as stupid as it sounded, it did just make it hit the spot and the food at Hogwarts didn't come anywhere near it. It made him wonder how lonely his dad was at home on his own while his two children were at school, but then again, knowing his dad, he probably had about a million other kids he didn't know about. "Like, do you ever wonder how your parents are getting on at home without you around?" He pushed the question further, he never got like this. He usually kept it to himself, but where he felt comfortable around Henry, he felt he could talk about it; Henry was probably one of the few people that had seen most of Ryan's true sides where he isn't cracking constant jokes. It was weird how he could go from one extreme to the other, but he also knew when he was relaxed he did tend to think about things more. Ryan's right hand pulled the can up to his mouth and he took a good gulp of it, the energy hit him almost immediately, he was going to be awake for at least another hour or so at this rate.

"Well, it's not like I'd be able to do it anyways, not being seventeen and all. But it's nothing compared to being here. It pretty much sucks, knowing there's this whole world, and for the summer months I have no access to it really, whatsoever." Henry sighed for dramatic effect. "I really couldn't imagine having gone my whole life knowing I was a wizard and just waiting. I'm glad I didn't have to know until I was 11, but still the summers are somewhat rough." He paused for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek thoughtfully. "I guess I'm trying to say that I'm glad that I didn't know what I was missing." Henry took the drink graciously, thanking him as he popped the tab. There was no way he'd be able to sleep tonight. He supposed he could use the night to get some homework done, but honestly, he'd rather spend it on top of the astronomy tower. And Ryan was good company. Henry looked at the can before taking another sip. "I really need to restock on my stolen collection of firewhiskey," he said thoughtfully. "Nothing quite like a night when you have no idea what happened and you wake up in the gardens the next morning. Happened to me one time. Had no idea how I got there." He laughed at the spotty memory. Then Ryan asked Henry about his family. It's not that he didn't want to talk about his parents, he loved them dearly, but he didn't want people to know how often he was homesick. "Yeah, I suppose," he hedged. Deciding that Ryan was trustworthy, he divulged one personal fact. "I like to come up here so much because I know that when I look up, they're under the same sky as me. They see the same stars and the same moon and the same sun. First and second year were hard for me, since I'd never been away from them for too long. I know they get along just fine without me, you know the country is still running somewhat smoothly thanks to dad. And they write. But I like to think about the fact that the sky is above all of us, we just have to look up to see the same things." tag/Ryan Cunningham

Ryan couldn't understand where Henry was coming from on this whole not knowing and having to wait thing, Ryan loved the idea that he knew he was going to grow up and become skilled, it gave him time to research the subjects that interested him the most and find out which ones he would want to pursue, instead of having to find out when he was at the school. He chuckled to himself when Henry mentioned about the firewhisky and waking up on the lawn with no recollection of how he got there; he had a few nights like that back at home with his family or when he threw parties, but he would never drink like that at school, not since the fourth year when he got caught drunk and had 50 house points taken from him and a month's worth of detention. That was a bad time for him, especially considering how hungover he was for his first detention. "Well, I suppose man, but it's shit if you get caught in that state, trust me on that one." He gave a side glance, but then again, work hard and play hard was a good motto to live by, as long as he put 100% effort into his work, why couldn't he have the odd night off and get drunk if he wanted to? "If you're game to get drunk one night though, I'm feeling a common room party, assuming one of those portraits or ghosts don't go squeeling." He suggested, it was his turn trying to get some convincing done.
The atmosphere suddenly changed when Henry opened up about why he was really up here, or so what Ryan assumed he was up here for. It sounded like he was home sick, so what's the best thing to do in this situation? Try and offer him some sort of comfort? Just play dumb? The thought stayed with him for a minute, then he opened his mouth as if to say something, he quickly closed it again and took a sip of his drink, then placed his hand on Henry's shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. "You'll be fine pal, you've only got another year after this one and happy days all around." He said, lowered his gaze to the floor and lowered his head slightly. He had never really thought of the sky in that way and it seemed like something really personal to his friend, something that he knew was one of those things it was better not to get involved in too much. Two years, that was all. What was he going to do with himself? He had a rough idea of what he wanted to do but he didn't have a clue about how to get there at all. Who was he even going to speak to from school still? He was hoping he'd some how manage to stay in contact with Henry, for sure. He seemed like one of those people who would stay as a life long friend if they both made the effort and who knew? Henry could end up as his best man or something at some point. "What do you plan on doing when you get out of here, anyway? Off to some big shot job in this world or the muggle world?" He teased a bit, trying to lighten the mood. As much as Ryan did seriousness, he didn't want it to turn into one of those nights, he wanted a night full of banter with Henry.

Henry couldn't hold back a laugh as Ryan warned him of the dangers of drinking. "I'm aware," he started. "But we've gotten away with it so many times before, Kessler won't give a damn." He grinned at the suggestion of a common room party. "What else would we do? Get drunk just you and me? You're just trying to get me to lose my inhibitions, you sneak," joked Henry. Their conversation had a heavy air then, as Henry confessed about feeling homesick sometimes. He was embarrassed about it, but he was definitely a momma's boy. And a daddy's boy. "Well, I love being here, of course," he said thoughtfully. "It's not like I want to go home. I want to stay here forever, just wish I could see them more. The house elves are great cooks, but they don't compare to my mum's cooking." Henry grew thoughtful at Ryan's question about the future. He had no idea what he wanted to do. Of course, Henry could follow in his father's footsteps and go into politics without a problem, but that was so boring and monotonous. He wanted to do something exciting, with danger around every corner. "You know, I'm not really sure." He thought a bit more. "I don't really know what careers there are for stupidly daring blokes." Henry took a sip of the drink again, feeling almost as if he was going through the motions. The jolt of energy didn't even hit him this time. "What about you?" asked Henry, glancing at Ryan. And then, a thought came to him. "You know, being a curse breaker for Gringotts could be pretty cool. Mess around in Egypt and such all day. Don't think I'd complain. But I wouldn't know who to talk to about getting into it. I suppose we have those career advice sessions though, yeah?" His gaze was stuck on his friend, and he realized that he was truly having a good time, just talking on top of the astronomy tower. It didn't feel awkward to him at all. Henry was glad that he had this chance to get to know Ryan a little better. Realizing he was staring, Henry quickly looked away, heat creeping up his neck into his cheeks. tag/Ryan Cunningham

Ryan's mind was racing with the thought of throwing a common room party, he hadn't done it in so long and last time it got so loud that the portraits had been moaning at him for days through the corridors leading up to the common room, it didn't bother him too much but he could deal without the abuse like last time. He nodded when Henry mentioned about Kessler not really caring; it was true. Last time Kessler didn't even mention it, but was completely aware that it had gone on. "Well, what else would I do with such a strapping man such as yourself?" He fired back without missing a beat when Henry joked around about making him lose his inhibitions. He raised his eyebrow and let on a side smile, then shook his head and looked at his feet with a full smile on his face finally. "Work hard and party harder, mush." The words flowed out his mouth as if he said them all the time without a thought, truth was, it was the first time he had even uttered his little 'motto' towards anyone in the school. The only down side to the common room parties was that electric powered objects didn't work in common rooms, granted most of the wizards in the common room came from wizarding backgrounds, but what was a decent party without a good sound system, strobe lighting and club themed music? Everyone that had been to Ryan's parties at home knew that he was one of those who would get absolutely obliterated and just party into the early hours of the morning while pouring shots down everyone's throats, he certainly partied harder than most people he knew, but every now and then someone did manage to out drink him. Something which he would always tell them it's a job well done on their behalf.
If Henry wasn't going to go into something to do with politics, what would he do? Surely that was all he knew, that's what Ryan assumed of him anyway, coming from a political family. Before Ryan even had a chance to reply to what Henry said, he mentioned about Gringotts. "Well, yeah, I suppose, it would be decent and you could always talk to those career advice people, but would you really want to have to deal with goblins every now and then?" He asked with a bit of a frown, vile creatures if you asked Ryan. They just constantly looked miserable, aggressive and as far as he was concerned, they were rude most of the time, not to mention sneaky and they knew how to scam someone proper good, either. "For me? It's got to be opening a shop or something." He began, looked at Henry dead in the eye, "Nothing too flashy, not one of those get rich schemes, just enough to live comfortably and happy, that's all I want." He finished off, ran a hand up to his hair and pushed it back a bit then averted his gaze, but he could feel Henry's eyes on him still, something which made his hair stand on end a bit. He didn't find him intimidating, but he hated being stared at, but the relief was astronomical when he saw out the corner of his eye that Henry had also looked away. "It's alright mate, I know I'm crafted by a God, it's only natural to want to stare at these beautiful features." He took a deep breath in then reached up to the back of his neck to scratch an itch on it, then raising his head back, stretching out the neck muscles and pushing the air out of his lungs.
{Sorry it took so long to reply}

Henry shrugged his shoulders. "Come to think of it, I have been feeling a bit uptight lately. Better sooner rather than later, y'know?" He did agree somewhat with Ryan's statement about working and partying. But he felt the need to alter it. "More like work a bit, party a lot." Henry wasn't much for schoolwork. It was boring and predictable. A half meter essay here, practice charm work there. Henry couldn't be bothered to do it. "All this talk of drinking makes me thirsty. And not for monster," he added, remembering his drink. "Thanks for it, again." He took a sip. They spoke a bit about the future and what jobs they would potentially aspire to. Henry thought that being a curse breaker would be kind of neat. "Yeah, I think I'll take goblins any day. Adds something to the adventure of it all, you know? I don't like to be bored," Henry reminded his friend. "Although you'll be in for a treat being a shopkeeper. Think of all the things you'll have to handle. I'm sure you'll be fighting the gentlemen and the ladies off you," he finished with a laugh. Henry couldn't help but stare at Ryan for a moment, and when he realized it, he looked away, suddenly uncomfortable. Ryan had noticed, since he said something about it. Thinking quickly, Henry replied "Well, I had to compare. I know that I'm crafted by a God. You just think so." It didn't really make much sense, but Henry was, of course, not very bright. He still felt somewhat tense, even though both of them had made an effort to relieve it. "So. Should we do something? Usually, coming up here is something I don't mind getting used to, but I can tell I'm getting antsy. Aren't you?" He asked, standing up and stretching. He offered Ryan a hand to help him up. tag/Ryan Cunningham

Admittedly, Henry didn't really seem himself entirely tonight, it made Ryan wonder what was up but he didn't want to poke his nose in Henry's business too much, as much as they were friends and room mates, he didn't feel it was necessary to know every single itsy bit of detail going on in the boy's life, just like Ryan liked some privacy in his own life. He took Henry's hand and pulled himself up off of the floor, then nodded. "What you got in mind?" He asked, then grabbed his drink and glugged down the last swig or two, then threw the can over the side of the tower, just like he did with the other. Ryan didn't have a clue what he wanted to do, he was more than game for getting legless, or for going for a stroll assuming they don't get caught, or even heading down the forest like Henry had suggested earlier. He had his wand with him so he was game for anything, even if it was a bit of danger. He was never one to turn down an adventure in the dark, especially if there was the danger of getting mauled by something. "I'm definitely feeling something dangerous." He popped up out of nowhere, then he looked at Henry and whispered and teased "If you're not chicken". At that point he grabbed his bag half full of energy drink and threw it over his shoulder.
He waited for Henry to give him a general direction to walk in, but before he could he decided he wanted to know what was wrong with Henry tonight, it wasn't like him to be like this, not in Ryan's experience. "Right, so, you going to tell me what's up with you? You don't seem to be normal tonight mate." It blurted out like a five year old who couldn't wait to tell a tale on someone and get them into trouble. [/blockquote]
